Preschool Language Scale – Fifth Edition (PLS-5)

The Preschool Language Scale-Fifth Edition (PLS-5) is an individually administered assessment tool designed to identify children who have a language disorder or delay. It was normed on English-speaking children from birth to 6 years 11 months. It is composed of 2 subscales:  Auditory Comprehension and Expressive Communication. Auditory Comprehension evaluates a child’s level of understanding of language. The tasks for preschool-age children assess understanding of basic vocabulary, concepts, and grammatical markers. Expressive Communication evaluates how well a child communicates by producing language. The child is asked to name common objects, use words to describe objects, and express quantity concepts, and use specific prepositions, grammatical markers, and sentence structures. The standard scores are based on a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15.
